from_2_to_the_power_of_0_to_2_to_the_power_of_20
is the acoustic representation of an exponential series of numbers to base 2 with the exponents 0 to 20. So:
20=1, 21=2, 22=4, 23=8, 24=16, 25=32, … 220=1.048.576
Each of these numbers is symbolized by a corresponding number of sine waves of different frequencies. In the course of the piece, the sound thus changes from a single tone through increasingly complex mixtures of tones to a noise that actually consists of 1.048.576 sine tones.
The basic material is 256 (i.e. 28) sine tones, whose frequencies are derived from the orbits of the 8 planets. The numbers with the higher exponents are realized by doubling in combination with pitch shifting.
It is purely coincidental that the number 220 corresponds approximately to the number of people infected with the COVID-19 virus worldwide at the time the piece was created in early April 2020.
