When one enters a labyrinth or maze, one's attention is focused on memorizing the way to get to the destination and then finding it again. For me, this is a beautiful metaphor for an enlightening reception of music.
In music - no matter what age - what interests me most as a composer are the surprises, the unexpected changes of direction, the sudden transition from the seemingly safe, familiar to new terrain. This can concern individual lines, tone sequences and melodies as well as rhythm and harmony or even complex textures. With the acceptance of change, perception and cognition expand. The irritation offers pleasurable, aesthetic gain, once the labyrinth has finally been traversed.
Walking in mazes was a popular entertainment game in castles and parks since the Baroque period and even in Beethoven's time. So now I set off together with him on the path....
