Occasionally, parallels between musical and sporting activity suddenly come to mind. In both cases, a millennia-old, deeper-lying basic need is satisfied without producing anything material, anything 'useful'. In both cases, a certain amount of free time is a prerequisite for exercising this need. There is much talk of 'playing', even of 'movements', one admires the virtuosity of the players in both of this areas and the practising of an instrument, so musical 'training' definitely has a sporting aspect.
In the present piece - sportingly speaking - two string instruments compete against two woodwinds, or two low instruments against two high ones, or... or... But the musical structure follows its own laws, no sporting event is recreated.
May the listener nevertheless follow the musical course awake, with rapt attention, curiosity and pleasure, like a mixed doubles match in tennis...
